What we learned in Build 1

This was one amazing class! I learned way more than I thought I could. Our instructor, Deb, is great, her lessons are so clearly written and her help is fantastic. I am very glad I took this class!

Lesson one contents

Here is where we get the basics, for example, setting up our directories, folders, learning the XHTML which is newer than the old HTML tags, how to use the Validators. They are so helpful. Then lastly, very important, you gotta upload your stuff to the the LVS web host correctly and override your earlier stuff.

Lesson two contents

Here is where we learned how to put the color into our text, then how to use background images, which I love to do. And with our CSS, we have to validate it too. Then the special formatting which took a while to get thru my thick head. And lastly here were the hypertext links, they are fun, as you can put your pages and interesting links here in our class pages.

Lesson three contents

Here come the CSS font properties, which was eye opening for me, as I really didnt know much about fonts, its really interesting what you can do with them and the CSS text stuff too. Then the pseudo class selectors, I put some pretty nice colors for my links with this.

Lesson four contents

Images here. I love images, but learned that mine were too doggone big, so had to Photoshop them down to make our pages light. If the pages are too image heavy they will take way too much time to download on somebodies computer which has only dial up. Classes too, that is a great CSS way to change just one word, on color, one sentence, or more. Divs and spans too.

Lesson five contents

Here we learned how to put margins and padding here too. Tables need to be customized using this also. And we learned not to put pictures into tables! That is what Ive done on my picture album pages, and thats not the way to do it. So I now know how to do it properly, though it will take some practise for me.

Lesson six contents

Meta tags are very important, they give the info about your pages. And I use the search engine repellant ones, as I really dont want Google and those guys to snag my homework pages. The directories are discussed here too, and the link to the big tutorial on this is here too, and thats a page we should hang on to for reference. And last but not least, how to make an index page. That keeps onlookers from being able to back up into your directory and seeing it. Or to download our pictures. This sure was a wonderful class. My descriptions here are not probably totally accurate, but it gives you an idea what you will learn if you take this great class. I will probably repeat it again, as some of the other students recommend this.

I know I should put in the active links where the lesson contents are, but Im going to leave that to the links on the top of the page, yes, that is where they are for now. My background image is not great, its a bit too busy and its hard to read the text, and also I have tons of fonts on my Mac and I realize that most people dont have this huge mass of fonts, but Ive got it set to back up to a standard font, so you should be able to read it OK. I will check this on my other computer, I got a Dell laptop so that I could use some photoshop filters and plugins that are not for Mac yet. I am naughty, I just HAD to put in background attachment fixed so that you can scroll over it. Grab the bottom of your browser's page and squish it all narrow and short, it works, yeah Im happy.
