Welcome to my journey though Build I class. I started out with no experience in web building whatsoever and this is a place to show off what I have learned through the six lessons provided to me by my instructor, Deborah, at LVS Online. Who would have thought all those symbols and letters could become such wonderful vehicles to display anything you want, when arranged in a certain way. I have learned so much!
Lesson one is where I learned what XHTML and CSS is and that you need to start with a simple text editor program that already comes with the computer. Learned basics about creating folders and saving files.
Next we learned about the tags and what they do. You need to have certain statements, declarations and tags that are needed on every web page to let the browser know what form of XHTML you are using. Along with that we learned tags like <p> to start a paragraph. We then saved a template that could be used to start other pages.
We learned page structure through the use of headings and also the most important one of all validating!
Take a look at my lesson one assignment.
We went further on the XHTML like how to use code to tell certain words to appear bold or italics and then got to learn about CSS and how to use color to make your page come alive. There was the new website to validate the CSS and also code to use for comments and special characters. The last thing in the lesson was about links and how to get them to work.
Here is my lesson two assignment.
Lesson three taught me how to make the text do what I wanted. I learned how to make it a certain kind of font, a certain size, align it on the page where I wanted and so on. I also learned how to make the links within the page change color to indicate whether they had been visited or not.
Next take a look at the lesson three assignment.
Lesson four was about classes which are like little post its within the page which tell certain parts of the page to have different properties than what is set at the top of the page. What you set for color or font in the body section at the top carries throughout the page because of "inheritance" but by creating a class you can tell a particular part of the page or words in the page to be a different color or font size or anything else you want. Hopefully I have grasped the difference between the selector and the class. The last part was about the Div Tag. This is a tag that you can use to make a whole section behave like you want. You do so by telling it to start dividing in a spot above what you want changed and ending it after the last thing you want changed on the page.
Before I go on to lesson four take a look at my assignment.
Lesson five was mostly about margins and padding. A concept that was very challenging for me at first. I think I am beginning to understand a bit better now after playing with things over and over again. Really the only way to learn. Using measurements like em or px you can tell a section to have a certain margin or to be contained in a "box" and have a certain amount of space between the top, right, bottom and left sides. I also read about how to create tables but because it was optional I did not.
Here is the lesson 5 assignment. My favorite page!
This last lesson we learned a bit about meta tags and then were let loose to use all that we had learned to create one final assignment. The difference in this assignment, as opposed to the others was the addition of an index page, which you are looking at now.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out my page. Hopefully you were intrigued enough to look at my pages and see what can be accomplished with a bunch of letters and symbols that may appear random but actually add up to a lot more. I had fun taking the class and am proud to share what I have accomplished. Especially because along the way I thought I would never make it through. Maybe you should try too! Please feel free to email me to let me know if you have any questions or comments on my pages.
