Westernaires

Westernaires is a non-profit, self-supporting youth group open to any child between the ages of 9 and 14 who lives in, or whose family owns property within Jefferson County, Colorado. Membership is open to all, regardless of race, religion or economic background.

Membership

New members are admitted once yearly, shortly after the opening of the traditional school year. A child need not own a horse, and many riders in the top teams are not horse owners. Rental horses from the Westernaire's livery string are provided at a nominal rental charge.

Further information is available. If you would like an application form mailed to you, please request one here.

Divisions

There are 3 divisions within the organization:

Blue Division

All first year members are in the Blue, or equitation, Division. This is where they learn about safety around horses & how to ride correctly.

White Division

After leaving the Blue Division, a rider progresses to the White Division where they continue to learn equitation and begin to learn maneuvers which they can then put together to form a drill.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police provide an excellent example of a mounted drill team.

While in this division, the riders also begin to perform in parades - there are many in the Denver area each year.

Red Division

Once riders have exhibited enough skill, they are moved into the Red Division. It is here that they begin to perform their drills for the public. As they hone their skills, they are moved to more experienced teams. The cream of the crop is the Varsity Red Team. This is the team that has traveled all over the US and parts of Canada and the team that performs during every performance of the National Western Rodeo each January (including the Lighted Grand Entry which is performed in the dark). They have even performed in a show in Denver with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
