On this page, I'm going to outline the pro's and con's of buy from breeders and pet stores.
PROS- The advantage of buying from a breeder is that you are not only purchasing a puppy but years of research and experience. Most breeders pride themselves in the puppies that they bring into this world. With every litter that they produce there is the hope that it is better than the one before. Most ethical breeders breed to acquire their next show prospect. Companion puppies are the result of these same hours and years of research!!! Your puppy's littermate could be the next Westminster Kennel Club winner!!!
CONS- The disadvantage of buying from some breeders is that there are unethical ones out there. Do not be impressed by fancy Webpages and fast talking salesmen. Just like buying a car, do your homework. Research and educate yourself so that you know the right questions to ask.
PROS- The only Pro that I can think of for purchasing a puppy from a Pet Store is convenience. When you talking about a living creature that you hope to spend 10 or more years with, should convenience be the only pro?
CONS- There are many disadvantages of buying from a Pet Store.
It is a very common fact that many puppies sold in a Pet Store are unhealthy. Puppies bred for the Pet Store industry are bred for profit and profit only. Very little consideration is giving to their health and well being. The primary focus for this type of "breeder" is to fullfil the Pet Store purchase order.
Many Pet Stores advertise that their puppies are Registered. I all fact they are registered with some organization but is it a credible registry like the American Kennel Club ,AKC or the Canadian Kennel Club, CKC? These 2 kennels clubs verify pedigrees and prove genetically the parentage of the puppies/dogs in their registries.
Due to the mass production of many puppies that are in the Pet Stores, care has not been taken to properly assess the parents temperaments prior to breeding. Temperament is one of the most inheritable characteristics. Puppies born under these conditions tend to be undersocialized and unfortunately the responsibilty that should have been the breeders is now the buyers. Great patience is needed to mold these puppies into the companions that you wish to spend many years with. Some, unfortunately, can not be changed and these are the ones that usually end up back at the humane society.
