This webpage will be about precious metals and their makeup. Precious metals include, white gold, 14kt gold, gold filled, fine silver, sterling silver. We'll also touch on the jewelry I want to sell and the divison of the companies and what each one offers.
Gold plated, silver plated and vermeil are a low end product. I don't use them my customers deserve better. If your going to take the time to add an expensive stone like a ruby or sapphire why in the world would you use a cheap metal to highlight it. It's true that gold plated, silver plated and vermeil are the poor man's gold and silver. But to me it's just cheap. We'll also discuss the uses of copper wire in today's jewelry.
An explanation of different metals their alloys and their strengths and weaknesses. Ganoskin Precious Metal article
I neglected to mention Rhodium, argentum silver, red gold, rose gold, platinum and a host of others. They are beyond the scope of this class err page. lol The link above goes into more depth on different metals, their alloys and strengths and weaknesses.
Gold Silver Copper My Jewelry Site
“Gold and Silver in their pure states are too soft for making objects that will last. Therefore, other metals are frequently combined (alloyed) with both gold and silver to make them harder. White gold was formerly an alloy of gold and silver, which tarnished. White gold today is usually a gold and nickel alloy” From the above linked article by Sandra I. Smith. When working with gold and silver wire you can also work harden it so that the wire stays in the shape that you want it.
“White gold today is usually a gold and nickel alloy. It may also contain palladium, manganese, or tin, and does not tarnish. Nu-gold, Merlin's Gold, and jewelers' bronze are alloys of copper and zinc. They contain no gold. Gold-filled means a layer of gold has been fused to another metal. Gold-filled means a layer of gold has been fused to another metal”
Sterling silver is an alloy containing 92.5 parts silver and 7.5 parts other metal. It is also called 92.5 percent silver or 925 fineness. Although copper is the standard metal used in sterling silver, other metals may be used. Jewelry silver, used more in Europe than it is in the United States, is often 800 fineness, which means that it is an alloy of 80 percent silver and 20 percent other metal, usually copper. Spring silver is Sterling silver that is hardened to give it the "spring" needed for items such as money clips. Coin silver is an alloy of varying amounts of silver and copper. Sheffield plate is two thin sheets of silver with a sheet of copper fused between them.
Copper wire is a good choice when you are practicing wire work. Gold and silver wire are to expensive to practice on if your a beginner. Since the rise in silver and gold prices many artisan jewelers now use copper beads, copper wire and copper sheet to add to their designs to cut down on costs. Copper wire now comes in nine colors including it's natural color. They are black, silver, brown, gold, sapphire blue, magenta, green and red.
I wanted certain kinds of jewelry to add to my site. So there is a great diversity of pricing from low to moderate and high. Something for everyone and the more jewelry you have in all pricing ranges the more options anyone has according to their own style and budget. Silver and gemstones are my favorite so there are plenty of choices. Native American silversmiths are the finest craftspeople and their jewelry is exquisite. I was lucky enough to locate several groups that will sell wholesale. Including a company of Native American silver artists from the Pacific Northwest. Jade is one of my favorites and there's a company that specializes in jade. 14kt and white gold were on my list almost missed them. What a great find.
