Summer in the city means 2 things to Chicagoans: Construction and Festivals. The former we dread, the latter is one of the many reasons we love our city.
Throughout the summer months there are countless festivals. Book fairs, street fairs, art fairs, food festivals. music festivals, and parades. Every weekend the list of things to see and celebrate is pages long You name it, it is celebrated in our city.
I am only going to be focusing on the 2 largest music festivals that we have in Chicago, the Pitchfork Music Festival and Lollapalooza Festival. There are many many other smaller festivals you can see. The 4th annual Pitchfork Music Festival is being held this year on July 17th to 19th in Union Park.
It is a three-day event showcasing over 40 of independent music's best bands and artists on three stages. In addition to the 3 stages, there are various food and drink vendors, plus local craft vendors selling all kinds of clothes, jewelry and more, and community and political groups to meet with and talk to. In addition to all of that, they have 2 large tented areas, one where record store vendors and the bands performing themselves can sell their music, and one where local independent artists who design posters and graphic art of the music community can sell their work and you can talk to the artists.

This years lollapalooza festival is taking place 18 years after the original lollapalooza touring festival was created in 1991. But this is the 5th year the festival is being held in its single 3 day event location of Grant Park in Chicago. This years festival is August 7th to 9th.
Musically Lollapalooza is much bigger than Pitchfork, showcasing over 200 bands and artists, from independent to major label big names over 8 stages, with and 1 stage entirely dedicated to showcasing DJs. The setting is much larger and there is a much larger selection of food and drink. The one thing Lollapalooza does not have is as much of the cultural booths, nor the arts and crafts. But there is still plenty to do, see, drink and eat while not seeing bands. They are just not in as much of a community setting as they are at Pitchfork.
