Home Remodeling the Hard Way

with Allison Wood

Have you ever tried to "do it yourself"?

I have. Many times.

Not because of any supporting evidence or past success, my husband and I think that we're skilled enough to complete most home remodeling and repair projects ourselves. So far, this has included painting walls and trim, hanging drywall, replacing plumbing fixtures, installing light fixtures, replacing decking, and tiling floors.

Has it ever gone horribly, irreversibly wrong

House Exploding
Youch!

It has. Many times.

One of my favorite memories is of my husband and I attempting to re-install the tank on the toilet while all of the water in the house was turned off and he had 30 minutes to take a shower and get to work. Eventually, a real plumber had to come and do several hundreds of dollars worth of repairs.

Then this is the site for you! Keep reading for this week's story and tip

Story of the week: December 12, 2006

Right now, we're in the middle of two projects: remodeling the bathroom and converting the attic into a bedroom for the boys. As I write, my husband is cutting out wallboard to install around the bathtub. Without the budget to install a shower (which would involve moving plumbing and tearing out walls) or the skill to install ceramic tile, we've opted to slap up some wallboard and call it a day. What is wallboard? Basically, it's waterproof paneling designed in one of several patterns, frequently used by cheapskates in places like bathrooms. Our wallboard looks like white ceramic tile, and it only cost about $25 for the entire bathtub surround.

Tip: Many wood-based materials (especially the cheap ones, like wallboard) will chip when you cut them. To minimize chipping and maintain the almost-real appearance of your faux-ceramic tile wallboard, apply a strip of masking or painter's tape along the edge to be cut.
